PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE

LattimerLawns Care Programs provide all the fertilizer, weed control, crabgrass control and control of turf damaging insects needed throughout the season.

Why Fertilize Your Lawn?

We hear this question a lot. It would be nice if we could fertilize our lawns once and be done with it, just like it would be nice if we could mow once for the season and that would be it. In the real world, where your lawn provides a growing, natural setting for your home and a place for your family to relax and play, it needs a regularly scheduled fertilization program to reach its potential.

Your lawn needs a balanced fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium to keep it healthy and strong. Most soils have some of these elements present, but usually they become depleted over the years. Turf is a very hungry plant during its major growing seasons.

Proper fertilizing with balanced applications throughout the growing season promotes thick, dense grass that can resist disease and weed invasions.

LattimerLawns uses a special blend of balanced micronutrients designed to give your lawn the right mix of fertilizer components and trace elements to ensure that your lawn looks great.

If you've used a lawn care provider in the past and were unhappy with the results, their service, or you got the feeling you were just another number on someone's corporate list of things-to-do, give us a call. You'll be amazed at the difference between LattimerLawns service and all the others. We're locally owned and operated, and we know how treat your lawn!

BROADLEAF WEED CONTROL

LattimerLawns uses the best broadleaf weed control products on the market today. There are many products available that are cheaper than the ones we use; however, you get what you pay for. We don't skimp when it comes to controlling weeds.

Broadleaf Weed Types: Do you have visions of having a beautiful lawn surrounding your house, but your neighbor's dandelions keep creeping into your yard, more and more each year? Do you have more crabgrass in your lawn than fescue? LattimerLawns can help!

Each year we see all kinds of lawns with extreme weed problems—we're not intimidated though!  In fact, the more severe the problems, the better we like it, because the change is so dramatic.  People just can't believe it's the same lawn.

If your lawns has weed problems, or looks thin, we can help.

Controlling weeds is usually a multi-step process. First, for broadleaf-type weeds, we'll get rid of them right away. For grass-type weeds, like crabgrass, we'll put down a protective barrier in early spring which will stop them from sprouting.

Next, we'll apply special fertilizers that will encourage your grass to grow. In extreme cases, we might suggest that your lawn be over-seeded to help fill in bare spots where weeds were especially invasive.

Extreme cases may take a full season of care and treatment to recover, but rest assured, that by the following year, your lawn will be picture perfect.

CRABGRASS CONTROL

We will apply a pre-emergent product in early spring to prevent crabgrass all season long.

Grassy Type Weeds:  Crabgrass, probably the most common grassy type weed, is a warm season annual grass which grows best in the heat of midsummer when desirable lawn grasses are often semi-dormant and offer little or no competition. Crabgrass overwinters as seed, comes up about mid-May or later, and is killed by the first hard frost in fall.

Crabgrass grows best in full sun. It does not grow in shady places. Crabgrass can be controlled in a number of ways, but the best defense against crabgrass is a thick vigorously growing lawn that is mowed no closer than 2 1/2 inches for cool season grasses.

TURF DAMAGING INSECTS

Turf damaging insects can be divided into two categories: 'Surface Feeding' and 'Subsurface Feeding' insects.

Surface Feeding insects include Chinch Bugs and Sod Webworm. These destructive insects are treated with our two summer applications to protect your lawn from damage. Subsurface Feeding insects are grubs. There are many types of Grubs that damage turf and we can control all of them with our Preventative Grub Control Application.

Adult chinch bugs are about 1/4 of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. The insect mates early in the season when the temperature reaches 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The female lays eggs on roots, stems, leaves, leaf sheaths or crevices in nodes and other protected places. Eggs are laid over a 2 to 3 week period, with one female laying as many as 500 eggs.

Subsurface Feeding insects are grubs. There are many types of Grubs that damage turf and we can control all of them with our Preventative Grub Control Application.

These turf grubs are the larval stage of many different beetles, including the Japanese Beetle. The grub lives below ground and feeds on the roots of tender grass plants that soon kills the plant. They are most destructive mid-late summer, but the damage they cause may not show up until early fall and by then, it's too late.

Damage is most severe in drought years, and can be prevented by planting fine leaf and tall Fescues. Regular moisture increases levels of naturally occurring fungi that help keep chinch bugs in check.

If lots of sod webworm moths are observed in the evening, watch for damage in about 10 to 14 days. This is when their eggs begin to hatch into caterpillars. These caterpillars chew off the grass blades close to the soil surface leaving brown stubble as damage.  Early August is typically when we see the heaviest damage, although sometimes damage can be heavy in June.

AERATION AND AERATION WITH OVERSEEDING

Besides fertilization, aeration is probably the most beneficial thing that can be done to a lawn to improve the root system and increase the health and vigor of the plant. Overseeding at the time of Aeration is a great way to incorporate new, quality grass seed into a lawn to help fill in those thin areas or bare spots.

What is Aereation?

Aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve soil structure and reduce compaction.

What are the Benefits of Aaeration?

Core aeration helps the lawn's health and vigor, and reduces maintenance requirements. The following are other benefits of core aeration:

  • Reduces compaction of soil which allows grass to produce a stronger, healthier root system. Stronger roots will always be a great benefit to your lawn.
  • Fertilizer can get down to the root system more readily.
  • An aerated lawn will absorb more water.
  • Reduces water runoff and puddling.
  • Aeration breaks up the thatch layer. Annually aerated lawns will almost never develop a damaging thatch layer.
  • Enhances heat and drought stress tolerance.
  • Improves resiliency and cushioning for your feet.

When Should Lawns Be Aerated?

Annual aeration is beneficial for all lawns. Lawns growing on heavy clay or subsoil, and lawns exposed to intense use, benefit from two or more aerations each year.

Spring and fall are ideal times to aerate. We generally recommend aerating in the fall, after the stress of summer. Aeration, in combination with fertilization, enhances root growth and improves spring green-up.

Why Overseed at the Time of Aeration?

Overseeding at the time of Aeration is a great way to thicken up a thin lawn or introduce better grass types to a lawn.

Simply spreading grass seed over a lawn will give very poor results. By aerating first, the soil is cultivated, greatly improving the results. The majority of the new grass will grow in the aeration holes. 'Tufts' of new grass will grow out of the holes and then 'tiller-out' and thicken up the lawn.

HOW WE DO IT?

Most people only care about how their lawns look and not the technology it takes to make it the best looking lawn on the block. However, if you're one of those that also cares about all the tools of the trade, here's the place for you.

We use the right equipment for the right job. While most companies have only one type of equipment to use on all properties, we have the best types of equipment no matter what the conditions.

Each piece of equipment is designed to apply the exact amount of material, uniformly over your lawn. We calibrate our equipment daily. This means you will get the most accurate application every time.

The Ride-On is a combination Spreader and Sprayer. This means LattimerLawns has the ability to spread granular fertilizer over the entire lawn while just spraying weeds in the specific areas that need it. This is the most environmentally friendly way to treat a lawn. For instance, if you only have five weeds in your lawn, we will only spray those weeds. There is no need to spray where there are no weeds. Of course, if your entire lawn is full of weeds, we can get 'em all!

Other features of the Ride-On:

  • Constant Ground Speed assures constant application rates.
  • Operator fatigue never interferes with quality.
  • Devastating Weed Control.
  • Amazing hill-hugging ability.
  • The Ride-On is simply the best piece of equipment to treat most lawns.
